Estrogen and progesterone are thought to make pigment-producing skin cells (melanocytes) react more strongly to sunlight, causing dark brown splotchy areas on the face known as chloasma or “the mask of pregnancy.” Chloasma affects up to 70% of pregnant women. Chloasma is preventable by daily use of a facial sunscreen. Look for sunscreens containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide a they have higher SPF, need to be applied less often, and have no links to birth defects in medical research (unlike some other common sunscreen ingredients).
